OUR PET OF THE WEEK- RASCAL'S STORY

ABOUT PAWS

PAWS is comprised of a small group of women from New England and Tennessee trying to reduce the euthanization rate (previously 90%) at the Tipton County Animal Control shelter in Brighton, Tennessee. This shelter is forced to euthanize thousands of animals each year due to irresponsible pet owners that do not spay/ neuter their dogs in the area. Millions of dogs in America are euthanized each year due to lack of space and lack of funding to try and find them better homes...

Our mission is to save as many animals as possible, removing them from the shelter, having their veterinary needs met prior to traveling and then finding them loving homes throughout New England. We do this only with the assistance of many people volunteering their time by going to the shelter, transporting the dogs to the vet, fostering dogs who need special care, and arranging for their new and happy homes in this area. Most importantly, we cannot do any of this without those people willing to open their homes and hearts to these lovely creatures.

ADOPTION INFORMATION

This document will answer some of the most basic questions about adopting a dog from PAWS. Please read thoroughly and email with any questions:

IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION

PAWS would like to thank the staff at Hillcrest Animal Hospital for their continued support and incredible compassion for the dogs that they help care for. We would most especially like to thank Jill and Jamie for all the things that they do to go above and beyond for the Tipton dogs. There is absolutely no way we could save these dogs without their help. Thank you Hillcrest for all that you do!

We recommend that all adopters sign up for the first free month of shelterpetcare insurance. This insurance will not cover any pre-existing conditions and it more like an accident policy. However, if you new puppy were to get sick when they first get up here (and have proof that they were healthy when you first got the insurance), this would be covered. As Hillcrest is extremely strict and will not send a dog with any kind of fever, loose stool, or upper respiratory systems, you can always use Hillcrest records to prove that you dog/ puppy was previously healthy. It is up to you whether you want to continue to get this insurance. It will not cover shots or yearly exams (or any kind of preventative health). It is completely up to you:

PAWS would especially like to thank Dr. Norman Stillman, whom, without his help, we would not exist. Dr. Stillman has been instrumental in the veterinary care of many of the dogs that have come and has graciously agreed to continue the final treatment for the dogs that are heartworm positive. He has pioneered a collaboration with the Hillcrest Animal Hospital in Memphis that allows for us to bring the dogs that are heartworm positive into their permanent homes and rest comfortably before receiving their final shot. Had it not been for Dr. Stillman, these dogs would need to be boarded at Hillcrest for four weeks during their treatment or put to sleep. He is truly a fundamental part of our mission!

Like any rescue group, PAWS strongly advocates the spay and neuter of each and every dog. All dogs over the age of four months will arrive altered unless there are specific medical counter-indications. Adopters of puppies, must sign this spay/ neuter contract before adopting a dog. We will follow up with adopters when appropriate to make sure that spay/ neuter has been performed:

OUR TRANSPORT TEAMS

We simply could not do what we do without the exceptional help of Pam and Kyle's Peterson's Express Transport Service or Betty Danley's Go Transporters service. As someone who has done a volunteer transport once from Memphis to Portsmouth, I am simply in awe of these guys! They are wonderful to our dogs and we trust them implicitly to get them here safe.. Please visit their websites to see pictures of the RVs used to bring so many to safety!

Baby Clyde's Movie

PAWS would like to thank the staff at Tipton County Animal Control for all the help they give us. Often, they are the ones driving the dogs to Hillcrest Animal hospital which is located 45 minutes away from the shelter. Many weeks, they will make 3-4 trips to Hillcrest to help us get the dogs the medical attention that they need. They have an extremely difficult job seeing the repercussions of irresponsible pet owners and have to watch the faces on these poor dogs as their owners drop them off and then drive away. Without their constant help and support (and their tolerance of our eight thousand phone calls a day!), we would never be able to get many of these wonderful dogs out of the Tipton and into wonderful homes. They do the very best they can with limited resources given to them by the county and an epidemic of irresponsible pet owners. Thank you guys!

OUR PET OF THE WEEK- RASCAL'S STORY

Rascal is a 5 year old purebred papillon who weighs only 7 pounds.  On Saturday, April 21, 2007, I got a call at home from the Tipton County Shelter.  Rascal's owner had just dumped him at their kill shelter and they said he needed help desperately or they would have to euthanize him right then.  Of course, I took off to get him and took him to Hillcrest Animal Hospital in Memphis.

Rascal's owner said that another dog in the neighborhood had attacked Rascal and broken his jaw.  The owner waited THREE DAYS to even take Rascal to a vet.  When they found out what it would cost to put Rascal back together again, they said NO WAY and dumped him instead at the Tipton County kill shelter.  He was a shivering wreck and was in severe pain.

Dr. Ledbury at Hillcrest performed surgery to wire Rascal's jaw together -- the surgery took three hours because there were so many fractures in his jaw.  It will be wired together for 4-6 weeks, so I'm trying to find a temporary foster home for him in Memphis.  His medical bills just through last night are $1,500.  As you know, I've got 40 Tipton Shelter dogs at Hillcrest right now and boarding alone is $10 per night per dog.  I just could not afford to do this for Rascal but I couldn't say no either.

Dr. Ledbury did say that there is no way Rascal's injury is the result of a larger dog attacking him -- Rascal had no puncture wounds and no internal injuries besides his broken and shattered jaw.  Someone kicked that little tiny baby in the face!

No amount is too small!!!

If you would like to verify the legitimacy of my newest cause and this story, please feel free to call Hillcrest Animal Hospital and speak with Jill or Liz there -- (901) 377-2244

Donations can be made to my Paypal account at tparris2005@aol.com (note in the remittance box that it is for Rascal's Fund), or you can mail donations to me at Traci Parris, 7948 Quito Road, Millington, TN 38053.  Please make checks payable to Hillcrest Animal Hospital and mail them to me Traci Parris at my home address and I will deliver them to Hillcrest -- I want to be sure that the donations are properly applied to Rascal's account.

UPDATE: Rascal did beautifully in his surgery and is on heavy pain medication to make him comfortable. The tape on the tubing below his jaw will be changed on Friday so he doesn't have to endure any more movement to that area. He is getting plenty of food and water and on his way back to be nourished and hydrated! One of the vet techs who has fallen in love with this little boy has volunteered to bring him to her home and nurse him back to health when he is medically stable enough to leave the hospital. We will begin to look immediately for a perfect adoptive home for this little boy to spend the rest of his years. He will be spoiled rotten every day for the rest of his life if we have anything to say about it...

PAWS Merchandise

Over the last three weeks, we have run into some terrible luck and we are desperate for donations to help some of these pathetic cases...

CINDY'S STORY

Alison found Cindy Lou on the streets near a housing project. She had an obvious injury to her leg which the vet told us was a nasty bite from another dog and showed signs of abuse. One of the neighbors told Alison that they had witnessed Cindy Lou being beaten with a stick a few days back and was unable to identify the perpetrator. Amazingly, you would never know that Cindy Lou had been through such adversity. She is extremely sweet and friendly and all she wants to do is play. She is a little bit shy at first, but remarkable sweet and gentle given her history. We need help raising funds to cover Cindy Lou's X-rays and wound care so that it will not be cost prohibitive for a family to give this precious baby the life that she deserves... Poor Cindy also has heartworm :( Please consider making a donation in Cindy Lou's name...

UPDATE: Cindy Lou is doing wonderfully and has been adopted by Eileen and her wonderful family. She has been granted a wish that I am sure she never would have dared to dream- a family of her own that will spoil her rotten every day for the rest of her life. Congratulations Cindy Lou!

ZEKE'S STORY

Zeke is a purebred red doberman that was dropped off at Tipton. His owners dropped him off after having him for five years because they said that "he has something wrong with his kidneys and he is going to die anyway..." Traci went to Tipton to see him and started to cry. He lost almost ten pounds in one week at Tipton from his condition and he looked sick, scared, and hopeless. Traci gave him a pillow for him to lie on so his bony body could be more comfortable and he looked up at her with the most grateful eyes. I told her to pull Zeke and we would figure out a way to pay for his care.. He is currently at Hillcrest eating and drinking great (has put some weight back on!) and the vet staff is in love.. He had a Barium swallow that revealed mega-esophagus (of unknown etiology) and Hillcrest is performing more extensive tests. We told Zeke that we would rally animal lovers all over behind him so he can get the care he needs and not be abandoned yet again.. Please consider making a donation in Zeke's name...

UPDATE: Zeke is doing wonderfully! He is eating and drinking beautifully and has been gaining weight and starting to act like a guy that has some hope! The vets have determined that Zeke was born without a spleen, though this is not causing him any problems. We are waiting for the biopsy results to come back because the endoscopy did reveal some kind of growth and will have more news soon!

UPDATE: Zeke is now living a life that is probably better than most people! He has found the most wonderful home in Rhode Island and is living in a gorgeous cabin surrounded by tons of land. He is adored by his new Mommy and even has a few doggie siblings. Judy, we can not thank you enough!

MAGGIE'S STORY

This Momma lab is killing us all. The staff at Tipton has tried to keep her and her babies safe from the many germs that are prevalent in pounds and have placed her in the cat room to try and protect her. She has been in the cat room at Tipton for almost three weeks and she is running out of time. There is a wonderful rescuer in CT who will take her, but their funds are completely stretched and they need help to get her up to CT. This poor mother is desperately trying to wean her babies, keep them healthy, and not go crazy in her cage that is obviously much too small. We estimate that her vet bill at Tipton will be approximately $200 and her transport bill will be another $200. If we can collect $400 for this family, we can potentially save nine precious lives... Please consider making a donation in Maggie's name.

Update: While the staff at Hillcrest fought like crazy to do what they could to save her, poor Maggie died last week surrounded by people who loved her and couldn't bear to see her in any more pain. She has a terrible case of heartworm and developed a fatal upper respiratory infection. Four of her puppies have survived and are being bottle fed by one of the wonderful vet techs. Rest in Peace Maggie.....

NINE HEARTWORM POSITIVE BABIES IN TWO WEEKS...

Apparently, we have a knack for pulling heartworm positive dogs. In the last few weeks, nine heartworm positive adults have been pulled. While we have had great success at coming up with a protocal to treat the heartworm positive dogs, every heartworm dog is at least a $200 lost for the rescue. Please consider making a donation for the treatment of any one of these angels! (Names in order as they appear: Dolly, Cindy Lou, Gus Gus, Millie, Jerry, Minnie, Radford, Gonzo, and Willow) UPDATE: Every single one of these babies has been adopted and is living in a wonderful new home!
